Why does this home have the best view in Del Mar and is predominately single level?

This lot holds a special place in the region’s history and lends insight to why this home and its view are so special.

During WWII the US Army used this particular lot as a lookout bunker for enemy subs due to its unique and expansive view of the coastline. Notable is the fact that the Army leveled the hillside in order to accommodate their vehicles and munitions. As a result, this very large flat lot has a feature no other in the area had, the ability to build a large, predominately single-level home with unsurpassed views in all directions.

A well-known builder chose this lot and built his dream home taking advantages of views from every room with a mostly one-level home affording easy-living, vaulted ceilings, and great flow.

Today’s California Coastal Commission restrictions would not allow this type of lot to be created. Most of the homes in the area are built into the hillside and cliffs with three to four separate levels. It is also why the majority of homes in the area have a view in only one direction, to the west, and many have no ocean view at all.

The act of the Army creating this special piece of land affords 13045 Via Grimaldi the best over one-mile long white-water ocean views in the region. This home also enjoys unobstructed lagoon views (which are protected as part of a conservancy initiative) as well as views to the State Preserve to the north and views of the canyon and sandstone cliffs to the east. Since a State Preserve surrounds this home, no further development may occur in the area.

With the best view in Del Mar and predominately single level, this home is styled after the architecture found in Monterrey with a ski lodge feel, this home is truly one-of-a-kind.
