The name Univesity City was derived from the fact that it was closely located to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), which was a new university at the time of University City's development.  Many of the street names in "UC" and "UTC" are named after nobel prize winners.  There are two distinct parts of University City divided by Rose Canyon, featuring the Rose Canyon Open Space preserve, and railroad tracks passing through it. South of Rose Canyon lies the original part of University City, built in the 1960s known as  "University Proper" which is centered on it's main thoroughfare, Governor Drive. It is a mostly residential neighborhood along Governor Drive with many single family homes. Located southwest of the Governor Drive exit off I-805 is a commercially zoned area containing office parks with low-rise buildings that were build in the early 1980s. The majority of "UC Proper" was developed in the late 1960s and 1970s at which time the 1-805 was completed.

The "newer" part of University City lies north of Rose Canyon; it is usually referred to as University Towne Centre (UTC). The entire area has also been nicknamed the "Golden Triangle" by commercial developers - it is adjacent to La Jolla Village.
